Thai Massage vs. Deep Tissue Massage: Which One Should You Book?
If you’ve never had either before, the names alone don’t tell you much. Both are popular at Mai Day Spa, both help people unwind, and both get requested for very different reasons. Here’s the real difference, so you can book the one that actually fits what you need.
What is Thai massage?
Traditional Thai massage is done fully clothed, usually on a padded mat, with no oil. Your therapist uses their hands, forearms, knees, and feet to guide your body through a series of stretches, alongside rhythmic pressure along the body’s energy lines. It’s closer to assisted yoga than a typical Western massage. People book it when they want to leave feeling loose, mobile, and stretched out, not just relaxed.
What is deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage uses oil and slower, firmer strokes that work into the deeper layers of muscle. It’s more like a traditional Western massage, but with more sustained pressure, focused on the specific spots where you’re holding tension, often the shoulders, lower back, or neck. People book it when they want focused, targeted pressure rather than a full-body stretch.
The key differences, side by side
Clothing: Thai massage is fully clothed. Deep tissue uses oil and you’re draped with towels.
Technique: Thai massage uses stretching and rhythmic pressure. Deep tissue uses slow, firm, targeted pressure.
Feels like: Thai massage feels like assisted yoga. Deep tissue feels like focused, deep bodywork.
Great for: Thai massage suits flexibility and feeling loosened up. Deep tissue suits targeting one or two tight, specific spots.
So which one should you book?
There’s no wrong answer, it depends on what you’re after that day. If you want to feel stretched out, more mobile, and energised, Thai massage is usually the better fit. If you’re carrying tension in one or two specific spots and want firm, focused pressure there, deep tissue is usually what people reach for. A lot of our regulars actually alternate between the two depending on how they’re feeling that week.
If you’re ever unsure, just tell your therapist what you’re hoping to get out of the session, tension relief, flexibility, or simply time to switch off, and they’ll recommend the treatment that matches.
Can you combine them?
Some clients like to build a longer session that blends both styles. Mention it when you book and we’ll tailor the session to you.
Frequently asked questions
Is deep tissue massage more intense than Thai massage?
They’re intense in different ways. Deep tissue uses firmer, more sustained pressure on specific areas. Thai massage is more about full-body movement and stretching, and pressure varies throughout.
Do I need to be flexible to enjoy Thai massage?
No. Your therapist works within your natural range of movement, not past it.
Can I request a mix of both styles in one session?
Yes, let us know when booking and we’ll tailor it.
Which one is better if I’m pregnant?
Please see our separate pregnancy massage guide, and always check with your doctor or midwife before booking any massage during pregnancy.
